Julian Barnes
The Sense of an Ending
Jonathan Cape
Dame Stella Rimington chaired her panel of judges through a controversial year which culminated in Julian Barnes being crowned winner for his first novel for six years, The Sense of an Ending. The bookies’ favourite to win, Barnes had been shortlisted three times previously and had in the past described the Man Booker Prizeas ‘posh bingo’. His winning book went on to sell over 300,000 hardback copies in the UK alone.
